Two old Bulgarian sheep breeds and the Grey Iskar Cattle are preserved in Kabiuk. The Grey Iskar cattle are the outcome of a rural selection based on crossing the local shorhorn and longhorn cattle. The result was well-framed bulky animals (280 - 360 kg) of milk yield of 800 - 900 Е. The Iskar Cattle used to be a popular breed in Bulgaria as it was quite adaptable to the weather conditions and the environment, its vigour and resistance to ailment was notable and its efficiency was high. After 1950, the breed was gradually replaced by the Black Pied and other selected breeds. |

Today, there are about 250 animals of this breed in Bulgaria. The Copper Red sheep have lived in this area since ancient times. Their wool is rough, dark brown. They are relatively small in size (35 - 45 kg of live weight). Their fertility is about 125-135 lambs per 100 sheep; the milk yield is about 40 l per lactation. The sheep are healthy and tolerant to the environment conditions. This is an endangered breed. The Karakachan sheep bear the name of the people who raised them. |

The Karakachans were groups of people whose only occupation was sheep raising. They travelled all through the year between North Bulgaria and the Sea of Marmara. The Karakachan sheep have rough white wool about 14-18 cm long, average weight of 30 - 35 kg, fertility of 130 - 140 %, milk yield of about 35 - 40, tolerant to diet and conditions, resistant to ailment. This is another endangered breed. The animals in the reserve are in the national genetic fund of the Republic of Bulgaria. |
